Cover Letters for Resumes - should you or not have one?

There is always a great debate on whether a cover letter should be included in an application for employment. As someone who sees a lot of resumes, the ones that stand out are those with well written cover letters. Why?

70% of gaining a new role is about marketing yourself. A well written cover letter and resume opens the door and provides direction for the interview.

A few tips on cover letters

Think about what you want to say before writing the cover letter

Tailor it to the job, many people write a standard cover letter and never customise - big mistake

Highlight 3 or 4 key skills that make you the suitable candidate for the role relating them to the job criteria

Highlight 3 key achievements that demonstrate you can deliver to the criteria

End with a request for an interview and at least 2 ways they can contact you.

Check that there is no spelling or grammar errors

Follow up your application by phone to show your interest.

You will be well on your way to securing an interview and the job with a well written cover letter backed up by a solid resume.

Until next time

Annette
